Acupuncture:

What is Acupuncture:

        Acupuncture is a natural, holistic system of medicine that has been in existence for over two thousand years.  It consists of the insertion of very fine, sterile, needles at specific acupuncture points located on the body.  The insertion and manipulation of these needles works to stimulate and balance the flow of Qi in the body, in order to prevent and treat illness and disease.  Qi can be defined as the body’s “life force” or “vital energy”.  It flows through specific pathways in the body called meridians.  Most of the acupoints into which the needles are inserted are located along these meridians.  Qi is what is responsible for making sure everything in the body is functioning properly.  Pain and disease arise over time when the flow of Qi becomes blocked or when the body becomes deficient in Qi.  Some of the things that can influence the quality, quantity, and balance of Qi include:  physical and emotional trauma, poor diet, lack of exercise, accidents, overexertion, and seasonal changes.  Often times the body is able to heal itself when a blockage or imbalance occurs.  But, if this disruption persists or is excessive, or the body is in a weakened condition, pain, illness, or disease can set in.
